How Much Life Insurance Do You Need

Navigating life insurance in Austin, TX isn't simple, but knowing your family's needs helps. Consider expenses, debts, and future costs to find the right coverage.

Life Insurance

How much life insurance would your family need to keep paying the bills if you were no longer here? Start with the expenses and responsibilities you want covered, then subtract the resources your family could realistically use.

For families in Round Rock, Austin, Hutto, and Pflugerville, that might mean keeping a home, paying for childcare, or helping children continue their education. A useful estimate starts with your household budget rather than a national average.

Start with the expenses your family would need covered

The Texas Department of Insurance recommends considering debts, income replacement, and other expenses when deciding how much coverage to buy. [1] Use those categories to build a picture of what your family would need.

Ongoing household support. Estimate the annual shortfall after the surviving household’s income and other reliable support. Consider groceries, utilities, transportation, health coverage, and childcare. Then decide how long that support would be needed.

Mortgage and other debts. Decide whether you want insurance to pay off the mortgage or help with ongoing payments. If you include a payoff, remove those payments from the ongoing budget so you do not count the same expense twice. List other debts separately.

Education and future goals. Choose an amount for college, trade school, or another goal based on what you want to contribute. Avoid treating an assumed future cost as a guaranteed price.

Final expenses. Allow for funeral arrangements and other immediate costs. Get local estimates when possible.

For context, the National Funeral Directors Association’s 2023 study reported a national median of $8,300 for an adult funeral with viewing and burial, and $6,280 for viewing and cremation. These are 2023 figures, not current Central Texas quotes. They exclude cemetery interment, monuments or grave markers, and certain third-party charges, such as flowers and obituaries. [2]

Subtract resources your family can actually use

Review savings, investments, and existing life insurance. Only subtract money you intend to make available for these needs. Retirement accounts, emergency savings, and funds reserved for other goals may not all be available for immediate spending.

List employer coverage separately from policies you own. It may help meet today’s needs, but you should also understand what happens if your employment changes. Once you have listed your needs and available resources, the remaining gap gives you a starting point for discussing coverage with an advisor.

Include the work of a parent who does not earn a paycheck

A parent who stays home may provide childcare, transportation, and household support that the surviving family would have to replace. Build a separate estimate for each parent based on their contribution and the help the household would need.

Frequently asked questions

Is an income multiple enough?

  • It can provide a rough starting point, but a household budget shows which expenses need funding and for how long.

Should both spouses have coverage?

  • Evaluate each spouse separately. Income and unpaid household work can both create a financial need for the surviving family.

When should I review my estimate?

  • Revisit it after a new child, a home purchase, a change in employment, or another major change in responsibilities.
